ESSENTIAL ADVICE AS AT 9AM, MONDAY 25 MAY 2020

  • A ‘State of Emergency’ is in place until 11.59pm, 31 May 2020
  • Schools are gradually resuming classroom learning on Tuesday 26 May 2020
  • All Victorians are encourage to ‘Stay at Home’. Permitted reasons to leave home are:
    • shopping for essentials,
    • receiving medical care or caregiving,
    • exercising,
    • travelling to work or education, or
    • visiting friends and family
  • Victorians are also permitted to hold or attend:
    • outdoor gatherings with up to 10 people
    • indoor gatherings with up to 5 visitors
    • weddings with up to 10 guests
    • funerals with up to 30 people outside
    • religious gatherings and ceremonies with up to 10 people
  • From 1 June 2020, Victorians will be permitted to:
    • attend restaurants and cafes with up to 20 people
    • stay in tourist accommodation (provided there are no communal facilities)
    • attend libraries and other community facilities with up to 20 people
    • attend galleries, museums and other cultural activities with up to 20 people

RENTAL ASSISTANCE

  • On 15 April, the State Government announced that temporary changes will be made to Victoria’s rental tenancy laws, including:
    • a temporary ban on evictions (exceptions will apply)
    • a pause on rental increases for six months
    • land tax relief for landlords (25% discount + deferral of tax until March 2021)
    • rent relief for tenants experiencing financial hardship (for those with less than $5,000 in savings and still paying 30 per cent of income in rent)

RESTRICTIONS

  • The following facilities are restricted from operating: pubs, registered and licensed clubs (excluding bottle shops attached to these venues),
    • hotels (excluding accommodation), gyms and indoor sporting venues, cinemas, entertainment venues,
    • casinos and night clubs,
    • restaurants and cafes (takeaway and/or home delivery permitted),
    • religious gatherings and places of worship
    • food courts (except for take away),
    • auction houses, real estate auctions and open houses,
    • personal services ( beauty, nail, tanning, waxing and tattoo salons), spa and massage parlours, excluding health related services such as physiotherapy,
    • amusement parks, arcades and play centres (indoor and outdoor),
    • galleries, national institutions, historic sites and museums,
    • health clubs, fitness centres, yoga, barre and spin facilities, saunas, bathhouses and wellness centres and swimming pools,
    • community facilities such as community halls, libraries and youth centres,
    • RSLs
    • indoor and outdoor markets (excluding food markets).

BANKING – HOME LOAN DEFERRALS

  • The major four Australian banks have announced that home loan customers experiencing financial challenges due to the coronavirus will be able to pause their repayments for up to six months. You can contact the major banks on the following numbers:

EMERGENCY FOOD RELIEF

  • Vulnerable Victorians who are required to self isolate, due to the coronavirus, are eligible to receive a two week supply of essential goods.
  • The relief packages will include items like: long life milk, pasta, cereal, canned vegetables and sugar. Personal care packages will also be provided. They will include items like: soap, toothpaste and deodorant. Households with young children may be eligible to receive nappies and baby formula.

  • The Australian banks have announced that they will defer loan repayments for small businesses affected by the coronavirus for six months. This announcement is welcome news in Victoria, where the 600,000 small businesses are the human face of our economy.
