Andrews Labor Government fails to prevent public transport union strike

Monday 5 August 2019

Confirmation that Daniel Andrews’ union mates have ordered industrial action later this month is another kick in the guts for Victoria’s travelling public.

Train drivers have said they will refuse to comply with directions to alter services from the timetable. This opens up the very real risk that alterations for safety reasons may not be complied with.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union has said it will refuse to check Myki cards and that booking office staff will refuse to sell and upload Myki cards on the days of industrial action.

Interference with timetabling and work bans will reduce the number of trains available for timetabled services, and passengers who want to do the right thing and pay for their fare won’t be able to.

Daniel Andrews has failed to act, and now the travelling public will suffer.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations, Nick Wakeling:

“This latest announcement is only a taste of things to come as the rail union has commenced industrial action with no end in sight.”

“For weeks, the Liberal Nationals have called on Daniel Andrews to do his job and step in to resolve this dispute.”

“Victorian commuters will now suffer due to the Premier’s inaction.”
