Children still being exposed to abuse in state care

Friday 2 August 2019

The latest data from the Department of Health and Human Services reveals that serious incidents involving children in protective care are continuing to rise.

There were 183 allegations of physical, sexual, emotional/psychological or financial abuse involving vulnerable children in last quarter of 2018/19, a 63% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

For the year ending 2018/19:

  • there were 25 reported deaths and over 700 reported cases of abuse in the child protection system;
  • more than 1 in 10 vulnerable children weren’t allocated a case worker; and
  • there were more than 122,000 reports to child protection services about the wellbeing and safety of children.

Sadly, more and more children are going into state care because the number of children exposed to harm in Victoria is on the rise.

While Labor’s Child Protection Minister simply “hopes” the number of children going into out-of-home care will reduce, not enough is being done to protect children and reduce the number of children who are exposed to harm in the first place.

The Liberal Nationals are renewing calls for Daniel Andrews and his Minister to take urgent action to protect vulnerable children in care.
